West Point and The American Revolution: The Great Chain & Her Fortification
At the height of the American Revolution in 1777, after the surrender of Fort Montgomery and Fort Clinton,
the New York Hudson highlands were left virtually defenseless against British invasion. Seeing the strategic
value of this gateway land, General Washington established Fortress West Point, farther upriver on the
Hudson and installed a great iron chain across the river to prevent the British from crossing. Today, we know
it as West Point, the nation’s oldest, continually occupied military post. Join Lt. Colonel Sean Sculley as he
shares his research with us on this iconic site in American history and its role in the Revolutionary War.

to a wider audience.
